Among the many reasons I love to travel are two types of experiences. One type is the unexpected, something you had no previous expectations, or had never heard of but turns out to be magical. An example for me would be experiencing the traditional flamenco dance in Spain or, on this trip, experiencing Diwali with our hotel "family."

The second experience is the kind where you think you know all about what you are going to see, convinced that there is no possible way the experience can live up to the hype. I have experienced this three times: the first was when I first viewed Michelangelo's David in Florence. The second experience was seeing the Parthenon in Athens. As familiar as these icons of Western civilizations are to you, nothing could prepare you for the magnificence of the in-person experience. The third experience like this was the Taj Mahal.
